Mythic storytelling: Barbara Newman in conversation with Jana Laiz
In mythic storytelling, we draw upon the rich tapestry of ancient myths, legends, and archetypes to weave together tales that resonate with the deepest recesses of human emotion and experience . We build worlds, by constructing a living breathing universe in which these stories unfold. These worlds possess their own history, cultures, and belief systems, By harmoniously blending these elements, storytellers captivate their readers and create enduring narratives that leave an indelible mark on the collective imagination. We will read from our own work, along with passages from authors like Ursula LeGuin and Madeline Miller.

Barbara Newman has always been a storyteller, first in the ad world where she wrote short stories, (very short stories,) 30 second commercials for iconic global brands. After hearing an NPR interview about the American cowgirl, she was so inspired, she left Madison Avenue for Montana to write and produce a doc film about their lives. Now her writing has taken a new form. Most recently, Barbara wrote the award-winning eco-fantasy, The Dreamcatcher Codes. She is at work on her second book.

Jana Laiz believes in magic. Her writing reflects an understanding of the worlds within worlds, the place many writers dwell. Her eco-fantasy novel, The Twelfth Stone emerged out of an intimate view into these worlds and her studies of the faerie folktales of Scotland and Ireland. She is the author of the award-winning novels Weeping Under This Same Moon, "A Free Woman On God's Earth,” The True Story of Elizabeth Mumbet Freeman, and more. Visit her at janalaiz.com.
