Madeline and Ian Hooper claim to have known little about gardening when they first bought their property in Canaan, New York. A White Flower Farm catalog, a few classes at Berkshire Botanical Garden, and an SUV loaded with 18-inch conifers marked the beginning of their eight-acre garden. Today, some of the very pines and firs that rode home in that car tower over a landscape that is at once formal and naturalistic.
First in this series, the Hoopers will share their triumphs, discoveries, and a few failures that have been part of building such a remarkable landscape, one plant at a time. Madeline may also offer a few tips from her PBS series GardenFit on how to garden without the aches and pains so many gardeners are prone to.
About The Garden-Makers Talks
Since its founding in 1887, Dewey Hall has been a place for Berkshire residents and visitors to come together for social and educational activities. As we approach our 140th anniversary, the board is making a number of capital improvements – among them, an enclosed garden behind the Hall where events, from our Dahlia Festival and Ice Cream Social to concerts and private celebrations, can spill outdoors and connect guests to the landscape.
Your suggested $25 donation for each program goes directly to the Dewey Hall Garden Fund, which will create our own Arts-and-Crafts garden. The new garden will also provide accessible entry into the Hall, welcoming everyone through a landscaped garden and stone terrace.
Saturday, October 3, 2026 – 11 am
Dewey Hall, 9a Main Street, Sheffield MA 01257
$25 suggested donation – light refreshments to follow
